How to tell it apart
Sold by Carlinkit as the Tbox Max, also known as the Ambient: LED lighting on the top of the case, Android 13. The SDM660 version has an extra USB port; the SM6225 version does not.

Identify your unit

The TBox Ambient is the Carlinkit box with LED lighting on its top. Carlinkit now sells it as the Tbox Max and states on the product page that the two names mean the same device. It runs Android 13 and comes with 4/64 or 8/128 GB.

Three hardware versions exist, and each takes different firmware:

  • SM6225 (QCM6225), sold as Tbox LED. The common one since late 2023.
  • SDM660, sold as Tbox USB. Same idea with an extra USB port for external devices. It shares firmware with the SDM660 TBox UHD.
  • QCM6125, early 2023 units. The forum firmware lists show these taking TBox Plus EAU builds.

Open Settings → About and read the processor line before you download anything. The which TBox do I have page compares the Ambient with the Plus, UHD and Ultra.

Engineering menu & codes

Open Settings → Other → Factory settings and type a code on the keypad:

  • 4545: factory menu. The 4 Dec 2023 build added a start-up delay of 0 to 20 seconds here, which helps when the car does not see the box after you start the engine (car doesn’t detect the AI box). Under Other you also find the navigation bar switch and the temperature display.
  • 166888: audio settings, including 44.1 kHz. Tap Save and wait for the reboot.
  • 110144: clears the cache after an update before you consider a reset; see factory reset after a firmware update.
Settings → Other → Factory settings → 4545 → Other. Reconstructed screen, labels may differ by firmware.

The full list, with what each setting does, is in the engineering codes table.

Firmware

Carlinkit’s download page (Support → Downloads on its own website) lists separate files for the Ambient LED and for the Ambient and UHD on SDM660. The firmware request page explains how to ask support for a specific build. This site does not host or link firmware files.

Install with the FOTA app from a FAT32 microSD card, following update TBox firmware with FOTA.

Firmware dateChipAndroidWhat changed, as reported
4 Dec 2023SM622513Fixed hangs and resets when updating with a third-party launcher set as default; start-up delay added to factory settings.
15 Dec 2023SM622513Further sound-quality fixes; LED on/off restored after the 12 Dec build broke it.
23 Apr 2024SM622513Flagged by the forum as not recommended: Android Auto broke. Fixed in the 25 Apr 2024 build.
27 May 2024SM622513Official release, shared with the UHD: fixes for no 4G after a slow car connection, no sound on 4G calls, high CPU load after connecting with Bluetooth off; new settings screen.
1 Apr 2025SDM66013Ambient and UHD SDM660 build listed on Carlinkit’s download page. No change log.
11 Nov 2025SM622513The owner who later lost the SIM reported no SIM problems up to this build.
3 Sep 2026SM622513Newest build owners discussed. No change log.

On builds after November 2025 one owner found the box no longer saw the SIM after a restart, and rolling back to a 2025 build fixed it at once; see TBox Ambient loses the SIM after 2026 firmware. The complete list is in the firmware tracker.

Accessories that matter

  • Y-cable. Reboots under load, with a SIM, or only in one car usually mean the USB port cannot supply enough current. Start with AI box keeps rebooting.
  • Cooling. The SM6225 runs warm in summer. Switch on the temperature display (4545 → Other) and read overheating shutdowns before you stick a heatsink to the case.
  • FAT32 microSD card of 32 GB or less, for local updates and recovery files.
  • Data SIM. If mobile data disappears after the car has stood overnight, see no mobile data after idle.

How to report a bug

Before contacting support, note:

  1. The processor and firmware date from Settings → About.
  2. Car make, model, year and head unit, and the protocol (CarPlay or Android Auto).
  3. Which build you came from, if the fault started after an update.
  4. A short video of the fault.

Write to [email protected]; hours and other channels are on the Carlinkit T-Box FAQ. The cross-brand checklist is on how to report a bug.
