Car Doesn't Detect the AI Box After Ignition: Set a Boot Delay
Head unit ignores your AI box until you replug it? Set a start-up delay of 10–30 s so the box waits for the car. Carlinkit TBox, ApplePie UX999.

Set a start-up delay so the box boots after the head unit is ready: on a Carlinkit TBox it is in Settings → Other → Factory settings → 4545 → Other → Delay start connection (20 seconds is a good start), on an ApplePie UX999 under Settings → Applepie settings → Boot delay. Five of the ten owners who reported back no longer had to replug the cable, and the community FAQ recommends it. If the delay does not help, switching the box to Android Auto or fitting a cable with a data switch worked for others.
Symptoms
- After you start the car, the head unit shows its own menu or your phone, and the box never appears
- Unplugging and replugging the box's cable makes it connect at once
- It connects if you open the driver's door first, but not if you open another door or the boot first
- It fails after a remote engine start, or after the car has been parked for a long time
- The box's LED is lit, so it has power, but the CarPlay or Android Auto tile does nothing

Why it happens
The box and the head unit start at different moments. Many cars power the USB port as soon as a door opens, but the head unit only boots when you open the driver’s door or switch on the ignition. The box starts first, looks for a head unit that is not ready yet, and gives up. When the head unit finally starts, nothing tells the box to try again, so the screen stays on the car’s own menu until you replug the cable.
Faster firmware makes this more likely. An ApplePie UX999 Ultra owner in an Exeed found the box stopped starting with the ignition after the two latest builds, which boot quicker than before. Chery and Exeed cars that put their CAN bus to sleep after a long stop show the same pattern, which is why the community FAQ names those brands.
A start-up delay tells the box to wait before it tries to connect, so it meets a head unit that is already listening. Some head units also show a pop-up asking whether to start the box or only charge it; if you miss it, the box runs on power only and looks undetected.

Set a start-up delay so the box waits for the head unit

Warranty warning: this uses developer or engineering access. Follow the undo steps afterwards; some sellers refuse warranty claims on units with debugging left enabled.
- On a Carlinkit TBox (Plus, Ambient, UHD, Ultra): open Settings → Other → Factory settings, enter
4545, and open the Other tab. - Find Delay start connection and note its current value, so you can put it back later.
- Move the slider to 20 seconds. If your firmware offers more and 20 is not enough, try 30. Carlinkit’s own guide recommends 20 seconds; on a 2023 TBox build 20 was the slider’s maximum, while TBox Ultra owners have set 30 and 60.
- Press Save next to the slider. The setting is not kept until you save.
- On an ApplePie UX999: open Settings → Applepie settings → Boot delay and set 10 seconds. This is a normal setting, not an engineering menu.
- Switch the car off, lock it, wait a few minutes, then start it the way you normally do and watch whether the box appears without a replug.
A TBox UHD owner in a Tank 500 set 30 seconds and the box connected by itself from then on, with one exception: after a remote start from the phone app it still failed, because the head unit was off while the box booted. An owner on a 2023 TBox build set the maximum of 20 seconds and the box began starting with the car, and a TBox Ultra owner whose box needed two attempts to load said the delay ended that. Two ApplePie owners, one in an Exeed TXL, set a 10-second boot delay and both reported the box starting with the car again. The community FAQ gives the same advice, with 30 seconds, for Chery and Exeed cars whose box does not boot after the CAN bus has been asleep.
It did not work for everyone. Five owners, in an Exeed VX, a Geely Atlas, a Haval Dargo, a Haval F7x and a Changan Uni-K, tried 10, 20, 30 or even 60 seconds without a lasting change. On the Dargo, 30 seconds made the CarPlay tile stop appearing at all, while 20 seconds missed only once in a week, so a longer delay is not always better. If the delay does nothing in your car, move on to the next two fixes. More codes for this menu are on the engineering codes page.
Switch the box to Android Auto if your head unit supports it
- Safe
- Time: 10 minutes
- Worked for 2 of 2 reports
- Check that the head unit accepts wired Android Auto: connect an Android phone by cable and see whether Android Auto starts.
- Switch the box to Android Auto with its mode button or the factory-settings option, as described in switch the box’s protocol.
- On the head unit, open the Android Auto tile, not CarPlay.
- Test the start sequence that used to fail, for example opening a rear door or the boot before the driver’s door.
One owner found that in CarPlay mode the box only connected if the driver’s door was opened first; after moving to Android Auto, the start order stopped mattering. A Tank 500 owner replied that the switch fixed it for them as well. Android Auto loses a few CarPlay features on some cars, so try the delay first if you are happy with CarPlay.
Fit a cable with a data switch so you can re-trigger the connection
- Safe
- Time: 15 minutes
- Worked for 2 of 2 reports
- Get a USB cable or inline adapter with a switch that breaks the data line (not the power line), in the plug type your car’s port uses.
- Put it between the box’s cable and the car’s CarPlay or Android Auto port.
- When the box is not detected, switch the data line off and on again.
- Accept the CarPlay or Android Auto prompt on the head unit.
This does not stop the box being missed, but it replaces crawling under the dashboard to replug the cable. A Geely Atlas owner made one with a push button and said it really helps; another owner who uses remote engine start reported a month without problems. It is the most practical answer for remote starts, where no delay setting helps.
Open the tile that matches the box's mode
- Safe
- Time: 2 minutes
- Worked for 1 of 1 report
- Check which mode the box is in. Most Carlinkit boxes ship in CarPlay mode.
- On the head unit, open the CarPlay tile for CarPlay mode or the Android Auto tile for Android Auto mode.
- If the head unit offers only one of the two, switch the box to that protocol.
A Jetour T2 owner thought the car could not see the box because they kept choosing Android Auto while the box was in CarPlay mode. Opening the CarPlay tile brought it up at once.
TBox Ultra 3 on wireless CarPlay: turn on automatic reconnection
- Safe
- Time: 5 minutes
- Worked for 1 of 2 reports
- Open the box’s own Bluetooth app, the one used to pair phones, not the Bluetooth page in Android’s system settings.
- Turn on the automatic-connection options for the car.
- Restart the car and check that wireless CarPlay starts without the cable.
An Ultra 3 owner said wireless CarPlay to their car did not reconnect after a restart until they ticked these options; afterwards it connected and started by itself. A BMW owner enabled the same options and still got a “Bluetooth out of range” error, and could only reconnect by deleting the box on iDrive and pairing again.
Things to try (unverified)
- Open the driver’s door first, or tap the tile. Two owners noticed the box connects when the driver’s door is opened first, because the head unit then starts before the box. Others found tapping the CarPlay or Android Auto tile was enough without replugging. These are habits, not fixes, and nobody tested them systematically.
- Watch for a “start or charge” pop-up. On some Geely and Haval head units, a dialog asks whether to start the box or only charge it, and it can be hidden behind the camera view. If you miss it, the box only charges. A short delay that keeps the pop-up from appearing during start-up may help; not confirmed.
- Check for power problems. If the box sometimes appears and then drops, or reboots during the drive, the USB port may be too weak. See AI box keeps rebooting; one TBox Ultra 2 owner found the box started first time once the engine was running and supplying more power.
- TBox Ultra 3 wireless pairing fails outright. One owner whose Ultra 3 reported “failed” when picking the car’s Bluetooth from its small screen was told to disconnect the box from any Wi-Fi network first, because wireless CarPlay needs both Bluetooth and the box’s Wi-Fi radio. They had already tried that; no fix was reported.
- After ADB work. If the car says the device is not supported rather than ignoring it, the box is probably still in ADB mode. See “Device not supported” after enabling ADB.
If nothing works
Write down the box model and firmware date (Settings → About), the car’s make, model, year and head unit, the protocol the box is in, the delay values you tried, and the exact start sequence that fails (remote start, which door first, how long the car was parked). A phone video of the screen from unlocking the car until the box should appear is the most useful thing a support engineer can get.
Send it to the manufacturer’s support channel; Carlinkit lists its contact on the official FAQ page. If a phone connected by cable in the same mode is also missed after a cold start, the head unit or the car’s USB wiring is the cause, and a dealer visit is the next step. The TBox Ambient hub collects other start-up quirks of that model, and start here covers how the box families differ if you are deciding whether to replace yours.
