AI Box Sound Quality: When 44.1 kHz (Code 166888) Helps or Hurts
Forcing 44.1 kHz (code 166888) helped some TBox Plus and Ultra 2 owners but caused crackle, silence or reboots for others. How to test it and undo it.

If the sound got worse, went silent or the box started rebooting after you turned on 44.1 kHz in factory code 166888, turn that switch off again and save: that fixed it for all five owners who reported trying it. The switch helped in three owner reports from TBox Plus-family boxes and two from TBox Ultra 2 owners (the community FAQ also says it helps some people), and made no audible difference for six others, so test it once against the same track and keep it only if you hear a clear gain.
Symptoms
- You turned on the 44K switch in the 166888 menu and the sound now crackles, distorts or is gone
- The box reboots the moment you press Play
- Music sounds quiet, thin or flat on a TBox Plus after an Android 13 update
- You are wondering whether the 44.1 kHz switch is worth turning on at all

Why it happens
The box sends its audio to the head unit as a digital stream over the CarPlay or Android Auto cable. By default the Android system picks the sample rate, usually 48 kHz. The Force 44K audio switch behind factory code 166888 fixes it at 44.1 kHz instead. That cannot make a recording better than it is; it only changes the format the head unit has to convert.
Head units differ in how well they handle each format. On some, mostly older ones paired with early TBox Plus firmware, 44.1 kHz removed distortion or raised a too-quiet output. On others the head unit or the newer firmware does not cope with it, and you get crackle, silence or a reboot. Moderators who answer most audio questions in the owners’ community now advise leaving it off on current boxes and turning off assistant wake phrases first, because those cause most bad sound (see crackling or muffled sound).
Which boxes did it help, and which did it hurt?
| Result | Box and context (from owner reports) |
|---|---|
| Helped | TBox Plus after an Android 13 update, on a Korean car (quiet sound fixed); two more owners in the TBox Plus / Ambient family; the community FAQ notes it helps “some people” |
| Helped | TBox Ultra 2 on December 2025 firmware: two owners (one heard the crackle return later) |
| No difference | Six owners, including a TBox Plus, a TBox Ambient and a box in a Porsche Cayenne |
| Hurt | TBox Ambient (SM6225): rebooted on Play; TBox Plus 4/64 on 27 May 2024 firmware: no sound; TBox Plus in a car with wireless CarPlay: no sound; the same TBox Plus that helped on a Korean car crackled in a Skoda |
| Hurt | TBox Ultra on a VW MQB evo / MIB3 head unit: distortion that stayed after switching it off; TBox Ultra 2: sound gone |
The pattern: when it helps, it helps on a particular head unit, and the same box can sound worse in another car.

Turn Force 44K audio off again if the sound got worse
- Advanced
- Time: 5 minutes
- Worked for 5 of 5 reports
Warranty warning: this uses developer or engineering access. Follow the undo steps afterwards; some sellers refuse warranty claims on units with debugging left enabled.
- Open Settings → Other → Factory settings and enter 166888.
- Turn the Force 44K audio switch off. The label may read “Mandatory 44K sound” or similar depending on firmware.
- Tap Save and wait for the box to reboot.
- Play the same track that sounded wrong and listen for a few minutes.
A TBox Ambient (SM6225) owner found the box rebooted every time they pressed Play with the switch on and played normally with it off. A TBox Plus on stock 27 May 2024 firmware and another TBox Plus in a car with wireless CarPlay had no sound at all until the switch was off. Two more owners had harsh crackle that went away when they switched it back, one of them noting that the sound became “full” again.
A TBox Ultra 2 owner lost all sound after turning it on and was advised to switch it back; they did not report the result. If switching off does not restore the sound, go to Fix 4.
TBox Plus or Ambient with flat sound: try 44.1 kHz once

- Time: 10 minutes
- Worked for 3 of 9 reports

- Turn off every assistant wake phrase first, as in crackling or muffled sound. That is the more common cause.
- Pick one track you know well and note the volume level.
- Open Settings → Other → Factory settings, enter 166888 and turn Force 44K audio on.
- Tap Save and wait for the reboot.
- Play the same track at the same volume. If anything is worse, use Fix 1.
The clearest success came from a TBox Plus owner whose sound turned very quiet after an Android 13 update; the switch fixed it on a Korean car. The same owner found it made the sound crackle in a Skoda. Two other owners in the TBox family said it fixed their sound, and the community FAQ lists it as something that helps some people.
Six owners heard no difference, including one with a TBox Ambient who tried several genres. Leave the 30–200 slider below the switch alone: no owner worked out what it does.
TBox Ultra 2: test it, keep it only if it helps
- Advanced
- Time: 10 minutes
- Worked for 2 of 3 reports
Warranty warning: this uses developer or engineering access. Follow the undo steps afterwards; some sellers refuse warranty claims on units with debugging left enabled.
- Make sure assistant wake phrases are off on the box and in your navigation app.
- Turn on Force 44K audio under code 166888, tap Save and wait for the reboot.
- Listen to the same track as before for a full drive.
- If you hear any new crackle or lose sound, switch it off again (Fix 1).
An Ultra 2 owner on December 2025 firmware, with all assistants already off, heard less crackle and more bass after turning it on. Another Ultra 2 owner said music crackled on their unit without it. A third reported a clear improvement at first, then crackle returning during longer listening until they paused and resumed.
Other owners on the same box heard no difference, and Ultra owners in the next fixes lost sound or got lasting distortion, so keep this switch only if your own before-and-after test is clearly better.
Sound still distorted after switching it off: factory reset
- Safe
- Time: 30–60 minutes including setup
- Worked for 1 of 1 report
- Do this only after Fix 1, with Force 44K audio already switched off.
- Write down your apps and logins; a reset erases them.
- Open Settings → System → Reset options → Erase all data (factory reset).
- Set the box up again and test the sound before you change any audio switch again.
A TBox Ultra owner on a VW MQB evo with a MIB3 head unit found the switch distorted the sound badly, and turning it off did not bring the old sound back. Only a factory reset did.
Things to try (unverified)
- Lower the box’s media volume a step. Set media volume on the box one or two steps below maximum and use the car’s knob for loudness. Suggested in several threads for crackle at high volume; see noise after switching to Android Auto for the one report where it helped.
- An equaliser app on the box. Owners who wanted more bass or less harshness installed an equaliser app with a preamp control and lowered the preamp slightly. Nobody compared it against the 44.1 kHz switch.
- Compare with your phone directly. If music from the phone over the car’s own CarPlay sounds clearly better than through the box, the limit is the box’s audio path; see Bluetooth music quality.
If nothing works
Write down the box model and firmware date (Settings → About), the car and head unit, the protocol (CarPlay or Android Auto), whether Force 44K audio is on or off, and which app you play music from. A short phone recording of the same track through the box and through the phone directly is the most useful thing you can send.
Send it to the seller or to Carlinkit at [email protected]. If the sound stays poor after a reset with the switch off and no assistants installed, the box’s audio path is the limit in your car, and start here explains how the box families differ.
