Update Fails After Disabling Verity? Run adb enable-verity First
Firmware update fails after a multitouch or gps.conf mod over ADB? Run adb enable-verity, reboot, then update. Carlinkit TBox Ultra and Ambient; root too.

Connect the box to a computer in ADB mode, run adb enable-verity, reboot, and then install the update; re-apply your multitouch or config change afterwards if the new build still needs it. It is the order the community's multitouch guide gives, and it cleared the refusal for the one owner who reported back; a rooted box needs its stock boot image back instead.
Symptoms
- Local update or the online update fails right after verification, although the file is good
- You enabled multitouch over ADB, or edited gps.conf or another system file, months ago
- Re-downloading the firmware and changing the card made no difference
- The box is rooted with Magisk and every update fails
- Updates installed fine before you followed an ADB guide

Why it happens
Android checks its system partition at every boot and before every update with a feature called dm-verity. The no-root multitouch guides for the TBox Ultra and Ambient switch that check off with adb disable-verity or adb remount, so files such as build.prop, sd-reverse.sh or gps.conf can be changed. On these boxes the changes are written to an overlay in a separate partition, and the original system stays underneath.
The firmware updater cannot verify a system in that state, so it refuses to install. The update fails right after the verification step, exactly like a corrupt download, which is why owners often spend an evening re-downloading files first. If you remember any ADB guide that included remount, start here.
Root is the same story one level lower. Magisk patches the boot image, and the updater refuses a box whose boot image is not the one it expects. The mechanism and the full multitouch procedure are in enable multitouch on TBox Ambient and Ultra; this page covers getting updates working again.
Fixes, ranked
Run adb enable-verity, reboot, then update

Warranty warning: this uses developer or engineering access. Follow the undo steps afterwards; some sellers refuse warranty claims on units with debugging left enabled.
- Put the box in ADB mode: Settings → Other → Factory settings → 142618 until “adb” appears, as in enable ADB on an AI box.
- Connect the box to a computer with platform-tools installed and check that it is listed.
- Run the commands below. On the TBox Ambient and UHD 6225,
adb rootis required; on the Ultra it does no harm.
adb devices
adb root
adb enable-verity
adb reboot- Wait for the box to restart, enter 142618 again to leave ADB mode, and reconnect it to the car or your power supply.
- Install the update with FOTA Update, online or with Local update from the card.
- If the new build still lacks multitouch, repeat the multitouch guide afterwards.
The multitouch guide linked from the Ultra owners’ FAQ gives exactly this order, and owners repeat it for every later update: switch ADB mode on, run adb enable-verity, switch ADB mode off, update. A TBox Ambient owner on the 10 Mar 2025 build found that no update would install after remounting the system to replace gps.conf; after adb enable-verity the update went through.
Rooted box: restore the stock boot image before updating

Warranty warning: this changes system partitions. A wrong file or an interrupted step can leave the box unbootable, and manufacturers treat it as outside warranty. Back up first and keep the undo steps open.
- Open Magisk and choose Uninstall → Restore images if it is offered; that puts back the stock boot image Magisk saved when patching.
- If Magisk cannot restore it, flash the stock boot image from the same official firmware package with the tool you used to flash the patched one.
- Restart and confirm the box boots without root.
- Install the update.
- To root again, patch the new build’s boot image, not the old one.
An owner with Ottocast Picasou 3 and 3 Pro boxes reported that updates failed only while a Magisk-patched boot image was installed; after returning the stock boot image, updates worked every time. The same owner noted that a factory reset does not remove a patched boot image. On Carlinkit boxes, the Magisk and QFIL root guide covers the complete uninstall before an update.
Things to try (unverified)
- Factory reset instead of adb enable-verity. An experienced owner said a factory reset also lets the update install, and another owner, whose own update failed at first while multitouch was on, suggested the same. Nobody reported back on it, and the first owner added that switching verity back on is less work than setting up a reset box.
- Magisk Complete uninstall on QCM6225 boxes. An experienced owner wrote that on 6225 boxes a Magisk complete uninstall is enough before an update, without
adb enable-verity. That holds only if you did not also remount the system for other changes. - Other causes of a failed update. If you never used ADB, look at the file and the card instead: see “upgrade failed” on TBox Ultra.
If nothing works
Note which guides you followed and which files they changed, the output of adb enable-verity (it says whether verity was already enabled), the model and firmware date from Settings → About, and the exact update error. That list tells support what state the box is in.
Carlinkit support ([email protected]) and Ottocast support ([email protected]) can send the official firmware or recovery package for your model. If the updater still refuses the box after verity is enabled and root removed, reinstalling the system with the official recovery images resets it to a known state; see recover a TBox Ultra with QFIL. If the box no longer starts at all, a repair or replacement is the honest answer, and start here compares the box families.
