AI Box Too Bright at Night: Dark Theme That Stays Dark

AI box screen glares at night? Switch to a dark theme, lower the launcher's white point, and stop the theme flipping back to light. Carlinkit, Ottocast.

Quick answer

If the screen glares at night, switch the box to a dark theme and turn on the CarCar launcher's Reduce white point slider; that dimmed the launcher for three of the three owners who tried it. If the dark theme keeps flipping back to light, set the box's own theme mode to a fixed Day instead of Auto. The box has no brightness slider of its own because it has no screen: the panel backlight is the head unit's job.

Symptoms

  • At night the box's apps glare with white backgrounds and there is no brightness slider
  • The dark theme keeps flipping back to light on its own
  • You set a dark theme in the launcher, but the box switches it back
  • The Display menu has a theme choice but no way to dim the screen
  • The screen is comfortable by day and blinding on a night drive

Why it happens

The box is a small Android computer with no screen and no light sensor of its own. It sends a picture to your car’s display, and the real backlight brightness belongs to the head unit, not the box. That is why there is no brightness slider in the box’s menus: the only thing the box controls is how much white it draws. On a dark theme it draws far less, which is most of what you can do about night glare from the box side.

Two things get in the way. First, some boxes have their own day/night theme mode, and when it is set to Auto it overrides the launcher’s and apps’ theme and keeps flipping it back to light. Owners who moved to a TBox Ultra found this started only after the switch, while their older Ambient never did it. Second, older firmware did not expose a dark-theme menu at all, so the apps stayed on blinding white backgrounds with no obvious way to change them.

If your screen is also laggy or oversized on a big display, that is a separate problem; see big screens overload the AI box.

Lower the launcher's white point on a dark theme

  • Safe
  • Time: 5 minutes
  • Worked for 3 of 3 reports
  1. Set the launcher and box to a dark theme first. The white-point option only appears while a dark theme is active.
  2. In the CarCar launcher settings, open Reduce white point and drag the slider down until the screen is comfortable.
  3. Switch your launcher widgets to their dark versions, so the dock and widgets stop glowing.
  4. For the actual panel backlight, use the head unit’s own brightness or day/night control. The box cannot change it.

This is the one owners point to most for night glare. One owner said it helped with exactly this problem; another said it was the fix on their previous car; the owner who first asked confirmed that the white point plus dark widgets solved it. The setting affects only the launcher and its widgets, not the apps you open inside it, and not the head unit’s backlight.

If you run the stock launcher instead of CarCar, you may not have this slider; switching launchers is one way owners got it, or use Fix 2 and Fix 3 on their own.

Stop the theme flipping: set the box to a fixed Day

  • Safe
  • Time: 2 minutes
  • Worked for 2 of 2 reports
  1. Open the box’s own settings (not the launcher) and find the theme or day/night mode. It is usually set to Auto.
  2. Change it from Auto to a fixed Day (or whichever one you want to keep). The box will stop switching it.
  3. Set the launcher and apps to the dark theme you want. They will now stay put instead of resetting.

A TBox Ultra owner set the box theme to a fixed Day instead of Auto and the theme stopped resetting. An Ottocast Picasou owner fixed the same flipping by turning off the box’s automatic day/night mode and picking one. On Auto the box fights whatever the launcher is set to, which is why forcing dark in the launcher alone does not hold. One reply blamed one owner’s flipping on a power shortage rather than the theme mode; if your box also reboots or drops out, read AI box keeps rebooting as well.

Turn on the Android dark theme so it stays dark

  • Safe
  • Time: 10 minutes
  • Worked for 1 of 1 report
  1. In Settings, type theme in the search box, open Dark theme, and set the schedule to Never so it stays dark all the time.
  2. On recent firmware, open Settings → System → Developer options and enable Override force-dark, so apps that have no dark mode of their own are drawn dark.
  3. Set each navigation and music app to its own dark theme, or to as in system so it follows the box.
  4. Reboot the box. The automatic light-to-dark switch only takes effect after a restart.

One owner reported these steps got them about 90 percent of the way on a Carlinkit TBox. If your Display menu has no theme option at all, the dark-theme menu arrived in a 2025 firmware build; updating the firmware can add it. Not sure which box or build you have? See which TBox do I have.

Things to try (unverified)

  • A sunset-to-sunrise schedule for the dark theme. Instead of Never, some boxes offer a sunset/sunrise schedule. It worked for one owner whose apps went dark every evening, but another found it either stayed light or stayed dark after each restart. Try it, but fall back to a fixed dark theme if it is unreliable.
  • A screen-dimming overlay app from Google Play. One owner mentioned a night-screen app that lays a dimming filter over everything. Nobody reported back on how well it works, and an overlay can interfere with touch, so treat it as a last resort and name-search the app yourself rather than trusting a link.
  • Check your head unit’s own day/night setting. On many cars the display’s day/night is tied to the headlights. If that control is fighting the box, setting the head unit to a fixed mode, or matching it to the box, can stop the picture jumping between light and dark.
  • A launcher version bug. A few CarCar launcher versions shipped with the automatic light/dark switch broken, so the theme stayed light even on a schedule. Updating the launcher, or setting a fixed dark theme as in Fix 3, works around it.

If nothing works

Note the box model and firmware date from Settings → About, the car make, model and year, and the head unit, and say whether the glare is from the box’s own launcher or from an app you open inside it. If even a full dark theme with the white point lowered is still too bright, the limit is the head unit’s backlight, and its own brightness or day/night control is the only thing left to turn down.

Official support can confirm whether your firmware is missing the dark-theme menu: Carlinkit at [email protected], Ottocast at [email protected]. If you are weighing a different box because the night picture bothers you, start here.
