QR Code or "Device Not Activated" After a TBox Update

QR code or Device not activated after a Carlinkit update? Get the box online with a SIM, then email the QR to Carlinkit support. TBox Plus, Ambient, Ultra.

Quick answer

Photograph the activation QR code and email it to [email protected], saying it appeared after a firmware update; support registers the unit and the QR disappears, which worked for three owners: one had the block lifted within an hour, another found the QR gone the next morning. If the box has had no internet since the update, insert a data SIM first: the community FAQ recommends it, and it cleared the message for one owner.

Symptoms

  • A QR code sits in the corner or over the screen after a firmware update
  • The box says "Device not activated" or "Please connect the Internet Sync time, then active"
  • The box will not switch to CarPlay or Android Auto while the activation screen is up
  • Settings and apps are gone and the activation message appeared at the same time
  • The QR stays even though the box has working internet

Why it happens

Carlinkit firmware activates the box online. On first start, and again after some updates or after the box falls back to factory state, it has to sync the time and check its serial number with Carlinkit’s server. Until that succeeds, it shows a QR code or “Device not activated” and may refuse to connect to the car.

Most of the time the box is waiting for internet. A box that lost its settings has also lost any Wi-Fi network it knew, so a data SIM is the quickest way to get it online. Carlinkit’s guide also mentions one non-network cause: if a second user profile is active, the box shows the activation message until you switch back to the owner account.

The QR that stays despite good internet is different. The server does not know that unit’s serial, which owners saw mostly on compatible boxes sold under other names and then flashed with Carlinkit firmware. No setting on the box clears that; Carlinkit has to register the unit.

Send the QR to Carlinkit support and let them activate the unit

  • Safe
  • Time: 10 minutes, then an hour to a day
  • Worked for 3 of 3 reports
  1. Give the box internet (a data SIM or a phone hotspot) so it can sync the time.
  2. If a second user was added, open Settings → More settings → System → Multi-user and switch back to the owner account.
  3. When the QR appears, photograph it so the code and any text above it are sharp. On some builds you open it from the AutoKit app under Settings → About → activation.
  4. Email the photo to [email protected]. Say that it appeared after a firmware update and give the model and firmware date from Settings → About.
  5. Leave the box online. The QR clears once support has registered the unit.
The activation message Carlinkit's guide describes; wording varies by firmware. Reconstructed screen, labels may differ by firmware.

An owner of a box sold as a TBox Plus equivalent installed the April 2026 Carlinkit build, got the QR, emailed support and had the block removed within an hour. An owner of an Ambient equivalent got the QR after updating one evening, emailed screenshots, and found it gone when they connected the box the next morning. A third owner said support needed only the QR screenshot, no photo of the box, and did not say how long it took. All three boxes were compatible units rather than genuine Carlinkit ones; Carlinkit’s own guide describes the same photo-and-email route for its boxes.

Insert a data SIM so the box can activate itself

  • Safe
  • Time: 5 minutes
  • Worked for 1 of 1 report
  • Recommended in the community FAQ
  1. Insert a working data SIM with the box powered off. Carlinkit’s guide says the logo side of the box faces up and the SIM’s contacts face down.
  2. Remove any PIN from the SIM in a phone first; a SIM PIN prompt can leave the box on a black screen.
  3. Power the box and wait for mobile data to come up.
  4. Check that the activation message has gone, then set the box up again.

The community FAQ gives this as the answer to a QR after an update, and a TBox Plus owner confirmed it: the box had suddenly lost all its settings and shown “Device not activated” with a QR code, and inserting a SIM made the message disappear. The settings did not come back, because the box had reset itself to factory state. If the SIM is not detected at all on a 2026 Ambient or UHD build, that is a separate problem: see TBox Ambient SIM lost after 2026 firmware.

Things to try (unverified)

  • Engineering code 6868. An owner suggested entering 6868 under Settings → Other → Factory settings and rebooting. The one owner who tried it, after restoring firmware, said it did not help. Codes are listed on the engineering codes page.
  • Phone hotspot instead of a SIM. Carlinkit’s guide accepts a hotspot. One owner gave the box internet that way and the QR stayed; it was not clear whether that box was a genuine Carlinkit unit.
  • Third-party firmware asks for its own activation. Builds such as dudu show their own activation screen, which Carlinkit support cannot clear. See third-party firmware for Carlinkit for how owners returned to stock.

If nothing works

Before you email support again, collect the model and serial from the box label, the firmware date from Settings → About, where the firmware file came from, and a sharp photo of the QR with any text around it. Say whether the box is a genuine Carlinkit unit or a compatible box sold under another name, because it decides what support can do.

If support cannot activate a compatible box, the realistic options are the firmware your seller originally supplied or a genuine unit. A box that shows the QR and also fails to boot or connect needs recovery rather than activation; the local update guide covers reinstalling official firmware. If you are choosing a replacement, start here explains the box families.

Parts the fixes above need

  • Data-only / IoT SIM card

AI boxes use the SIM as a modem; a data-only plan avoids voice-plan device locks.
