Crackling or Muffled Sound? Turn Off Voice-Assistant Hot-Word
Music or navigation crackles or sounds muffled through your AI box? Turn off voice-assistant hot-word and reboot. Carlinkit TBox Ultra, Ambient, Plus.

Turn off hot-word (always-listening voice activation) for every voice assistant on the box, including the one inside your navigation app, then reboot. That cleared the crackle for six of the eight owners who reported back; a factory reset worked for three of the four owners who tried it.
Symptoms
- Music and navigation prompts crackle, hiss or stutter through the car speakers
- Sound turns muffled, as if from a barrel or a basement, sometimes minutes after you start driving
- It is fine in the morning, then degrades, and a reconnect fixes it for a while
- Navigation prompts cut the music out or come only from some speakers
- The problem started after you installed a navigation app with a built-in voice assistant

Why it happens
Voice assistants with a wake phrase (“Hey Google”, Alexa, or the assistant built into many navigation apps) keep the microphone open all the time, listening for that phrase. On these boxes the microphone and the media output share one audio path to the car. While an assistant holds that path in its listening mode, the box degrades or reroutes the media stream, and what reaches your speakers is crackly, muffled or thin.
One owner traced the routing: while the assistant was active, the head unit sent audio only to the speakers it uses for navigation prompts. Those are enough for a voice, not for music. The effect builds up as apps wake their assistants in the background, which is why the sound can be fine at the start of a drive and bad twenty minutes later.
Fixes, ranked
Turn off hot-word for every assistant, then reboot
- Safe
- Time: 10 minutes
- Worked for 6 of 8 reports
- Open your navigation app’s settings and find its voice assistant or voice search section. Turn off voice activation (the wake phrase). One owner using a navigation app with its own assistant found the option under its full settings list, near the bottom.
- Open the box’s Android settings → Apps → Default apps → Digital assistant app, and turn off voice activation / “Hey Google” for the system assistant. If you have no use for it, set the assistant to None.
- Check any other app with a wake phrase (a second maps app, a smart-home app) and turn its voice activation off too.
- Reboot the box. One owner said the sound only came back after the restart.
- Play the same music and route that used to crackle and listen for a full drive.
You keep the assistant: tap its on-screen button, or map it to the steering-wheel button as described in assign your assistant to the voice button.
Factory reset the box
- Safe
- Time: 30–60 minutes including setup
- Worked for 3 of 4 reports
- Write down your apps and logins. A reset erases everything on the box.
- Settings → System → Reset options → Erase all data (factory reset).
- Set the box up, install only your music and navigation apps, turn off their hot-words as in Fix 1, and test before you add anything else.
Owners on a TBox Ultra running third-party firmware, an Ultra 2 that had been switched to Android Auto, and a box in the Ambient family all reported clean sound after the reset. One Ultra owner got clean sound back after the reset, but two days later the crackle returned in one music app while video played cleanly. Another owner noticed that on his box it starts after long-pressing the circle at the bottom of the stock launcher, which opens the assistant.
Things to try (unverified)
- Lower the media volume ceiling. In Settings → Sound, set media volume to about 85% of maximum and control loudness with the car’s knob instead. Suggested in two threads; nobody reported the result.
- Try another USB cable. One reply blamed the cable for most audio faults; the owner who asked fixed it with the hot-word setting instead, but a worn cable can produce crackle of its own.
- BMW iDrive 6: crackle only when the box’s music is paused. With music playing, prompts are mixed into the media channel and sound clean; with music stopped they go to the navigation channel and come out as static. Owners in three threads found no fix, only workarounds: keep media playing on the box, or turn spoken prompts off. An owner with iDrive 7 hears clean prompts in the same situation, so the problem looks specific to iDrive 6.
- After switching protocol, reset. If the noise began right after you moved the box from CarPlay to Android Auto, see noise after switching to Android Auto.
Two owners still had bad sound with every hot-word already off. One was on a different brand of box whose sound they found worse than their previous Carlinkit, the other had not tried a reset yet. If that is you, go straight to Fix 2.
If nothing works
Record a short video with the sound, and note the box model and firmware date (Settings → About), the car and head unit, the protocol (CarPlay or Android Auto) and which apps were running. Test once with the phone connected directly to the car: if the phone sounds clean and the box does not even after a reset with no assistants installed, the box’s audio path is at fault and the seller or manufacturer should handle it.
The sound quality guide covers the engineering-menu audio setting, which helps on some older boxes. If you are choosing a different box because of audio, start here.
