AI Box Overheating Shutdowns: Heatsink, Cooler or Fan?

AI box freezing or shutting down from heat? Add a heatsink or magnetic cooler, a fan, or move it into vent airflow. Carlinkit Ultra, Ambient, Picasou 3.

Quick answer

Fit a heatsink or a magnetic phone cooler to the box's heat-spreader side (the metal disc on the back of a TBox Ultra), and get the box out of a closed armrest. On a TBox Ambient or a Picasou 3 a heatsink alone was not enough, and owners needed an active fan or Peltier cooler. Ten owner reports confirm one of these four fixes.

Symptoms

  • The box shuts down or restarts after 30–60 minutes of driving, more often in warm weather
  • Navigation stutters, music crackles or the screen freezes once the box is hot
  • The back of the box is too hot to hold when you take it out of the armrest
  • It recovers after resting for a while, then fails again on the next long drive

Why it happens

The chips in these boxes are phone processors, but a phone has a large metal frame and your hand to soak up heat. A box lying in a closed armrest has neither. During a long drive with navigation, music and mobile data running, the chip heats until it throttles (freezes, stutter) and then restarts to protect itself. Owners reported throttling from around 80 °C; how hot is too hot shows how to read the number on your box.

Cooling works only if it touches the part of the case that the chip is attached to. On a TBox Ultra that is the metal disc (heat spreader) on the back. On a TBox Ambient and on an Ottocast Picasou 3 the chip sits behind plastic, so passive heatsinks help less and active cooling does more.

AI box caseSoCheatsink / cooler on the heat-spreader sideNeeds airflow:not a closed armrest~80–85 °C: throttlingbeyond: reboots
Heat flows from the chip to the heat-spreader side of the case; the heatsink or cooler must sit there, and the box needs air moving around it.

Before you buy anything, rule out power. A box that shuts down at 47–50 °C is not overheating: that is a normal temperature, and owners in that situation usually had a USB port that could not supply enough current. See AI box keeps rebooting.

Fixes, ranked

Add a heatsink or magnetic cooler on the heat-spreader side

  • Safe
  • Time: 15 minutes
  • Worked for 3 of 3 reports
  1. Take the box out of any closed compartment if you can.
  2. Find the heat-spreader side: the metal disc on the back of a TBox Ultra, or the back wall on other boxes.
  3. Clean that surface, then fix an aluminium heatsink to it with thermal adhesive or the thermal pad that came with it.
  4. Or clamp a magnetic (Peltier) phone cooler to the same spot and power it from a separate USB socket.
  5. Drive your usual route and compare the temperature reading with before.

The community FAQ gives this as the standard advice for a box that runs hot: buy a heatsink and stick it to the back. Owners of TBox Ultra boxes with a magnetic cooler running reported temperatures under 35 °C. One Ultra 3 owner glued a passive 90 mm computer CPU cooler to the base with thermal adhesive, removed its fan, and found the passive cooler sufficient.

Fit matters. One owner with an Ultra 2 fan shroud found the heatsink is not square, so it must be oriented so the box still slides into the shroud with its power cable facing the slot. Try the fit before the adhesive sets. An Ultra 1 owner dropped from 60–70 °C to 35–40 °C by wiring a fan directly to the board; that voids the warranty and is not recommended.

Use a fan or Peltier cooler on a TBox Ambient (a heatsink only delays it)

  • Safe
  • Time: 15 minutes
  • Worked for 3 of 3 reports
  1. Turn on the temperature display so you can see the effect.
  2. Fit a small USB fan blowing across the back of the box, or a magnetic phone cooler clamped to it.
  3. Power the fan or cooler from a separate USB socket, not from the box’s own port.
  4. Drive your usual route and app combination and check the reading again.

One Ambient owner running navigation and Spotify in split screen saw the box heat up within one to two minutes and reboot at roughly 75 °C. A heatsink only made it take a little longer; a fan fixed it. A second Ambient owner found that stutter, crackling sound and reboots stopped after fitting a fan, and a third traced stuttering to a box too hot to touch and cured it with a cooler.

For scale: another Ambient owner pushed the box to 91 °C with a benchmark app, and a Peltier cooler brought the same test down to 53 °C. In normal navigation and music use that owner’s uncooled Ambient stayed at 50–60 °C in warm weather, so how hard your box works matters as much as the cooler. A fan is audible in a quiet cabin; put it where the noise does not bother you.

Clamp a Peltier cooler to a hot Picasou 3

  • Safe
  • Time: 15 minutes
  • Worked for 2 of 2 reports
  1. Attach a magnetic phone cooler, with the metal plate it ships with, to the flat face of the Picasou 3.
  2. Power the cooler from a separate USB socket.
  3. Switch off the cooler’s RGB lighting if it has a switch.
  4. Drive your usual route with the SIM in and watch whether data drops or reboots return.

On the Picasou 3 the first sign of heat is often lost mobile data, then lag, then a restart. One owner had data drop when the box was hot, came back if the SIM was nudged, and stopped completely once a cooler was fitted. Another has used a Peltier cooler on the outside for six months, with the SIM in, and has had no overheating since.

The cooler has to sit flat. One owner drilled extra holes in the case and found it only somewhat better, which also voids the warranty. The Picasou 3 Pro guide covers the P3 and P3 Pro in more detail, including the hidden CPU monitor.

Hang the box in the air from a dashboard vent

  • Safe
  • Time: 10 minutes
  • Worked for 2 of 2 reports
  1. Mount the box on a vent holder (magnetic or clip) in front of a dashboard air vent.
  2. Route the cable downward so the holder stays put.
  3. Keep that vent open with the fan running on long drives.
  4. If it still shuts down at moderate temperatures, test the Y-cable power fix.

A TBox Ultra 2 owner whose box kept shutting down while lying on the console, even with a heatsink and trimmed background services, moved it onto the vent airflow and reported it now runs for as long as the drive lasts. A 40 mm heatsink alone had helped only a little. Another owner ran a box on a vent all winter with one reboot in that time.

Placement alone makes a large difference: a TBox Ultra 3 owner reported the box stayed cold hanging cable-down on a vent, while lying on the console its back was too hot to hold. If the vent blows heat in winter, choose a vent you can close, or use the cooler fixes instead.

Things to try (unverified)

  • Move the box out of the armrest. A closed armrest traps heat, and every fix above works better with air around the box. Nobody reported a move on its own as the fix, but it costs nothing and is worth doing alongside a cooler.
  • Still 60–80 °C with a cooler. That usually means an app is keeping the processor busy, not that the cooler is weak. See still hot with a cooler.
  • A very large head-unit screen. Boxes driving big, high-resolution displays run hotter. See big screens overload the box.

If nothing works

Note the box model and firmware date (Settings → About), the car and head unit, where the box sits, which cooler you fitted, and the temperature when it shut down. If it shuts down at a normal temperature, the cause is more likely power than heat.

A box that overheats with good cooling and only navigation and music running may be faulty. Contact the seller or the manufacturer (Carlinkit: [email protected]; Ottocast: [email protected]) under warranty rather than opening it. If you are replacing it, start here explains how the families differ.

Parts the fixes above need

  • Aluminium heatsink with thermal adhesive pad

Passive cooling stuck to the box's heat-spreader side; silent and needs no power.

  • Magnetic phone cooler (semiconductor / Peltier)

Active cooling that clamps onto the box; needs its own USB power.
