Exclamation Mark on the Wi-Fi or Signal Icon: Captive Portal
Exclamation mark or 'no internet' on your AI box while apps still load? Turn off Android's captive-portal check over ADB. Carlinkit TBox Ultra, Ambient.

Connect to the box over ADB, run settings put global captive_portal_mode 0, then run reboot as a separate command. Five of the seven owners who reported trying it lost the exclamation mark, and the community FAQ recommends the same change. On TBox Ultra units the 11 Dec 2025 or a later official build is worth installing first, because it addressed the same symptom without ADB.
Symptoms
- A small exclamation mark next to the Wi-Fi or mobile-signal icon in the status bar
- Wi-Fi details say 'Connected, no internet' or 'No internet access' although web pages load
- Google Play or Google sign-in says there is no connection while navigation and music apps work
- The mark came with a new box or a firmware update, on Wi-Fi and SIM alike
- The mark appears when the mobile signal falls back to 3G, and data stops

Why it happens
Every time an Android device joins a network, it requests a tiny test page from Google’s servers to find out whether the internet is really reachable or whether a login page (a “captive portal”, as in hotels and airports) is in the way. If that test request fails, Android marks the network as having no internet and shows the exclamation mark, even when other sites load fine.
The test fails on networks that cannot reach Google’s connectivity-check servers: networks that filter traffic, some mobile plans, some corporate or public Wi-Fi, and DNS setups that block those addresses. Apps that only need their own servers keep working; apps that ask Android whether the network is validated, Google Play and Google sign-in among them, behave as if you were offline. That is why the mark and the Google sign-in problem so often appear together.
Not every exclamation mark is a false alarm. If pages do not load either, the network itself has no internet; start with AI box SIM card not working instead.

Turn off the captive-portal check over ADB
- Advanced
- Time: 15–30 minutes
- Worked for 5 of 7 reports
- Recommended in the community FAQ
Warranty warning: this uses developer or engineering access. Follow the undo steps afterwards; some sellers refuse warranty claims on units with debugging left enabled.
- On a TBox Ultra, check Settings → About first. If the build is older than 11 Dec 2025, install the 11 Dec 2025 build or a newer official one with a local FOTA update; the community FAQ lists the 11 Dec 2025 build as the fix. If the mark is still there afterwards, continue.
- Connect to the box over ADB. Either enter 142618 in Settings → Other → Factory settings and plug the box into a computer, or turn on Developer options → Wireless debugging and pair from an ADB app on an Android phone on the same Wi-Fi. Enable ADB on an AI box walks through both.
- Run the first command and press Enter:
adb shell settings put global captive_portal_mode 0- Then, as a separate command, restart the box:
adb shell reboot- If you used code 142618 over USB, put the box back into car mode before you plug it into the car: enter 142618 again, or run
adb shell setprop persist.sdcarplay.reverse.disable 0. - Reconnect in the car and check the status bar. Open Google Play to confirm it connects.
In an interactive shell on a phone app, type the commands without adb shell: settings put global captive_portal_mode 0, Enter, then reboot, Enter. The most common mistake was pasting both lines as one. One owner’s box restarted with the mark still there, another’s restarted and would not come up in the car; both had typed the two commands together, and for the second owner entering reboot on its own fixed it. Unplugging the box instead of rebooting also did not make the change stick for one owner.
Owners on several TBox Ultra builds, including the 4 Jan 2026 build, and on third-party Bruxe firmware reported the mark gone, and one owner’s Google services came back at the same time. One owner noticed the box stopped finding GPS satellites after this change; nobody else reported that and the cause is unknown, so if it happens to you, undo the change and see inaccurate GPS on an AI box. Two owners saw no effect: one had typed the commands as one line, the other had no mark in the first place and was chasing a different Google Play fault.
Mark appears when the signal drops to 3G: set LTE only
- Safe
- Time: 2 minutes
- Worked for 1 of 1 report
- Open Settings → Network & internet → SIM card → gear icon next to the carrier name.
- Tap Preferred network type and choose LTE only (4G).
- Drive the route where the mark used to appear.
A TBox Ultra 2 owner’s data disappeared, with the exclamation mark, every time the box fell back to 3G; recovery took minutes or a restart. Locking the modem to LTE stopped it. The trade-off: where there is no 4G at all, there is no data either, instead of slow data.
Things to try (unverified)
- Point the check at a server your network can reach. Instead of disabling the check, Android lets you change the test addresses (
captive_portal_http_url,captive_portal_https_urlandcaptive_portal_fallback_url) to another provider’s “generate_204” page. Owners used this as an alternative to mode 0, but none compared the two, so it is not ranked here. - Factory reset. One TBox Ultra 3 owner did a full reset: Google services started working, but the mark stayed. It is not a fix for the mark itself.
- Newer official builds. Owners on the June 2026 builds for the Ultra 1, 2 and 3 reported no mark, and others still saw it on the same builds. Where the mark came and went on its own, the network was the likely cause, not the box.
- Third-party firmware. Some third-party builds for the Ultra advertise the mark as fixed. They are not supported by the manufacturer and are not linked here; see third-party firmware for Carlinkit.
- The mark returns after you switch off the car. One owner reported the change undone after every ignition cycle and got no answer. If this happens, check the setting with
adb shell settings get global captive_portal_mode; if it reads 1 again, report it to the manufacturer with your build date.
If nothing works
Note the box model and firmware date from Settings → About, whether the mark is on Wi-Fi, mobile data or both, whether web pages load in the browser, and the output of adb shell settings get global captive_portal_mode. Test the box on a different network, such as your phone’s hotspot on another carrier: if the mark disappears there, the original network is filtering the check and the box is fine.
Carlinkit support ([email protected]) can tell you whether a newer build for your model addresses the check. A box that shows the mark on every network, with no internet at all after the steps above, needs the SIM and network checks or a warranty claim; start here if you are weighing a replacement.
