Third-Party Firmware for Carlinkit: What Changes, What Breaks

Bruxe, DuDu or CarCar firmware misbehaving on a Carlinkit TBox? What each changes, what owners saw break, and how to return to stock with update.zip.

Quick answer

If a third-party build misbehaves, go back to the latest official Carlinkit firmware for your exact model: rename it update.zip, copy it to the root of the card or the box and accept the update prompt. Four owners left DuDu firmware that way, and three Ultra 3 owners restored a dead built-in display by installing the Ultra 3 build.

Symptoms

  • After installing a third-party build, the Ultra 3's own small display shows black, colour stripes or pixels
  • The no-internet exclamation mark is still there, or a menu you had on stock firmware is gone
  • The firmware asks for registration or activation, or the voice-assistant hot-word stopped working
  • Local update refuses the official firmware with a server or "wrong firmware" error
  • Android Auto no longer connects on a patched build that used to work

Why it happens

Owners who compare the builds say Carlinkit’s TBox firmware and that of several other box brands share one Chinese platform base. That is why firmware from other box makers, and patched versions of Carlinkit’s own builds, can install on a TBox at all. Owners mostly use three:

  • Bruxe, firmware from another box brand on the same base. Owners mention more display options on the Ambient (an HDMI switch and 60 fps), different sound and its own update channel.
  • DuDu, the system of another box maker. Owners praise fast start-up and settings; it requires registering the box, and it turns off always-listening voice activation in navigation apps.
  • CarCar’s patched build, Carlinkit’s 27 Mar 2026 Ultra 1/2 firmware with multitouch added, the no-internet mark removed and some apps taken out. It is not the CarCar launcher.

None of them is tuned for every model. A build made for the Ultra 1 and 2 has no driver for the Ultra 3’s built-in display, a newer base can lack features your box had, and certificates or activation servers outside Carlinkit’s control can expire. Carlinkit has since added multitouch for Android Auto and fixed the exclamation mark in several official builds, so check the firmware tracker before switching for those reasons.

Fixes, ranked

Leave DuDu firmware with update.zip in the root of the card or box

  • Advanced
  • Time: 30 minutes
  • Worked for 4 of 5 reports

Warranty warning: this uses developer or engineering access. Follow the undo steps afterwards; some sellers refuse warranty claims on units with debugging left enabled.

  1. Get the latest official firmware for your exact model from Carlinkit support.
  2. Rename the file update.zip. Do not unzip it.
  3. Copy it to the root of a FAT32 microSD card, or to the root of the box’s internal storage.
  4. Reinsert the card or restart the box. Accept the update prompt and wait for the install and restart.
  5. After the first boot, delete or rename update.zip so the prompt does not come back, and clear the cache with 110144.

DuDu’s normal Local update path refused the official file for several owners, with a server-connection or “wrong firmware” message. Three owners said update.zip took them back without trouble. The owner who first asked got it working after a factory reset of the DuDu build, a fresh download, and moving update.zip from the card to the box’s own storage, and was not sure which step mattered. One owner on the newest DuDu version could only get back through recovery, the last fix below. If DuDu asks for activation before you can reach the files, an owner’s tip was to reset it and keep it offline, with the SIM removed.

Ultra 3 display dead after a patched build: install the Ultra 3 firmware

  • Advanced
  • Time: 30 minutes
  • Worked for 3 of 4 reports

Warranty warning: this uses developer or engineering access. Follow the undo steps afterwards; some sellers refuse warranty claims on units with debugging left enabled.

  1. Get the official firmware for the Ultra 3 from Carlinkit support. Ultra 1 and 2 files will not drive the display.
  2. Copy it to the root of a FAT32 card.
  3. Open FOTA Update → Local update and select it. If the FOTA app says it is not responding, tap Wait each time.
  4. Alternatively, name the file update.zip in the card root and accept the prompt.
  5. After the restart, check the built-in display and the touchscreen.

The patched CarCar build is based on Ultra 1/2 firmware. Ultra 3 owners who installed it saw the built-in screen go black, show colour stripes or freeze as pixels. Three restored it by installing the official Ultra 3 build: one through Local update, one after advice in the forum, and one with update.zip. One owner had to send the box for repair. The patched build has a second problem: owners report it no longer connects over Android Auto because its certificates expired.

Return to the latest stock build for your model, then clear cache and reset

  • Advanced
  • Time: 1 hour
  • Worked for 2 of 2 reports

Warranty warning: this uses developer or engineering access. Follow the undo steps afterwards; some sellers refuse warranty claims on units with debugging left enabled.

  1. Download the latest official firmware for your exact model.
  2. Install it with FOTA Update → Local update as a replacement, not on top of a mix of builds.
  3. Clear the cache: Settings → Other → Factory settings → 110144, then unplug and restart.
  4. If problems remain, factory reset and set the box up again.

An Ultra 4 owner moved to Bruxe; the no-internet mark stayed and the app-split menu was missing, so the owner returned to stock. The advice in that thread for an Ultra 3 with a pixelated display was the same: the latest official build. A TBox Ambient owner whose music playback degraded on Bruxe installed an official September 2025 build, cleared the cache and reset, and playback was fine again.

When nothing installs over DuDu: recovery files with QFIL, then the card update

  • Brick risk
  • Time: 2 hours
  • Worked for 1 of 1 report

Warranty warning: this changes system partitions. A wrong file or an interrupted step can leave the box unbootable, and manufacturers treat it as outside warranty. Back up first and keep the undo steps open.

  1. Request the official recovery package for your model from Carlinkit support.
  2. Enter EDL mode: with the box unpowered, hold its reset button and connect it to the PC by USB.
  3. Flash the recovery files with QFIL, as in recover a TBox Ultra with QFIL.
  4. Install the current official firmware from the card with Local update.

An Ultra 3 owner who tried DuDu and found the built-in display broken returned to Carlinkit firmware this way. QFIL writes the whole storage; a wrong file or an interrupted flash can leave the box unable to start.

Things to try (unverified)

  • Third-party builds on boxes that are not Carlinkit. Owners of compatible boxes who installed Carlinkit firmware hit an activation QR; see device not activated. The reverse also happens: DuDu asks for its own registration, and some owners could not get the code to appear.
  • Voice-assistant hot-word. On DuDu, owners report always-listening voice activation in navigation apps no longer works; the assistant works from its button. If you rely on the wake phrase, stock firmware is the better fit.
  • Online updates on Bruxe. Owners say Bruxe’s own over-the-air updates are meant for Bruxe-branded boxes and often fail to download on a TBox. Install Bruxe updates from a file instead, or return to stock.

If nothing works

Write down the model and firmware from Settings → About, which third-party build you installed and from which version you came, and what fails. Photograph the box’s own display and the error text.

Email Carlinkit support at [email protected] and ask for the official firmware or recovery files for your exact model; say plainly that a third-party build is installed. The local FOTA guide covers the install, and factory reset after a firmware update covers clean-up. If the box no longer boots after recovery, a repair is the honest answer, and start here compares the box families if you are replacing it.

Parts the fixes above need

  • microSD card (32 GB or smaller, formatted FAT32)

Local firmware updates, reset files and protocol-switch files are read from a FAT32 card.
