AI Box Keeps Rebooting or Disconnecting? Start With Power

AI box rebooting or dropping out under load, with a SIM, or after app updates? Feed it from a second USB port with the Y-cable. Carlinkit, Ottocast, UX999.

Quick answer

Connect the second power lead of the Y-cable that came with your box to another USB port or a 12 V USB adapter, so the car's data port no longer has to power the box on its own. Seven of the nine owners who reported back said the reboots stopped.

Symptoms

  • The box restarts by itself while you drive, often a few minutes after the navigation and music apps start
  • It reboots only with the SIM card inserted, or every time the mobile signal drops
  • Reboots started after an app update, on a box that had been stable for months
  • It works in one car but bootloops as soon as the launcher appears in another
  • It boots fine on a computer or a strong charger but not from the car's USB port

Why it happens

An AI box is a small Android computer with a mobile modem, and it runs entirely from the car’s CarPlay or Android Auto USB port. Many of those ports are designed to charge a phone slowly and supply barely more current than the box needs at idle. When the processor works hard, or the modem hunts for a weak signal, the box asks for more than the port can deliver, the voltage dips, and the box restarts.

That is why the reboots look random. They follow load, not time: a navigation app recalculating, a music app buffering, the SIM searching for a mast on a country road. Owners of the Carlinkit TBox Ultra 2 noticed reboots starting after updates to their navigation and music apps, because the newer app versions ask a little more of the processor and the margin was already thin.

The Y-cable keeps the data connection on the car's CarPlay / Android Auto port and takes power from a second port or a 12 V adapter.

Heat makes this worse, and heat on its own can also cause shutdowns. If the box is hot to the touch, read AI box overheating shutdowns after this page; the two problems often arrive together.

Give the box a second power source with the Y-cable

  1. Find the Y-cable that came in the box. It has one USB-C plug for the box and two USB-A plugs: one carries data, the other only power. Carlinkit Ultra boxes ship with it; many owners found it still in the packaging.
  2. Plug the data end into the car’s CarPlay or Android Auto port, the same port you use now. If that port is USB-C, put a USB-A to USB-C data adapter on the data end.
  3. Plug the power-only end into a second source that can supply 1.5–2 A: another USB port in the car, or a 12 V socket adapter from a known brand.
  4. Restart the box and drive the route or the app combination that used to trigger reboots. Leave the SIM in if the reboots happened with the SIM.

The cable does not add the two ports together. It moves the box’s power draw to the second plug, so that plug must be the stronger source.

Two things to check before you settle on a socket. Many 12 V and USB charging sockets switch off with the ignition, so the box will now shut down the moment you stop the engine; one Ultra 2 owner found their music stopping with the ignition for that reason. And do not feed power through a USB hub: one owner reported a box that kept rebooting on a hub at home, and another burned out a hub while running a second power lead through it.

Things to try (unverified)

  • Set the SIM’s network type to LTE. In Settings → Network & internet → SIM → Preferred network type, choose LTE (or LTE/WCDMA). For reboots that follow a power shortage it is not a substitute for the Y-cable: the one owner it helped here changed it together with adding power. If your reboots happen exactly when the mobile signal drops, it has its own confirmations; see AI box reboots when mobile signal drops.
  • A box that bootloops in one car but not another. A TBox Ultra 3 owner saw this in a Mercedes and a Range Rover while it worked in their other car. Replies pointed to the weaker USB port in those cars, and the Y-cable fix above is the first thing to try. Nobody has reported back yet.
  • Add a start-up delay. If the box boots twice or the car does not see it after you start the engine, a delay in the factory settings can help. See car doesn’t detect the AI box.
  • Test without the SIM for one drive. If reboots stop with the SIM removed, power or network mode is almost certainly the cause. If they continue, look at heat and at the apps you run; see how hot is too hot.

If nothing works

Collect what a support engineer needs before you contact the manufacturer. Write down the box model and firmware date from Settings → About, the car’s make, model, year and head unit, whether the SIM was inserted, and what was running when it restarted. A short phone video of the reboot helps more than a description.

Carlinkit’s support address is listed on its official FAQ page; Ottocast and other brands list theirs on their own sites. If the box reboots even on a strong charger at home with no SIM and no apps running, the fault is probably in the unit itself, and a warranty claim or replacement is the honest answer. Start here explains how the box families differ if you are choosing a replacement.

Parts the fixes above need

  • USB Y-cable (second power lead)

Moves the box's power draw onto a second USB port or a 12 V adapter so the car's data port only carries data.

  • USB-A to USB-C data adapter

For cars whose head-unit port is USB-C while the box cable is USB-A.
