Identify your unit
The Mstick4 is made by MGears, a Korean brand, and sold as a wireless Android Auto AI box. It works only with cars that have Android Auto: if your head unit offers CarPlay alone, the stick has nothing to connect to.
MGears does not publish the processor, RAM or Android version in text on its site. Its official Recovery Tool installs MediaTek USB drivers, which points to a MediaTek chip; owners report 6 GB of RAM and Android 13, and one cited a retailer listing naming the Helio G99. None of these figures is confirmed by MGears.
You manage the stick through its own MGears settings menu on the car screen, or from your phone with the MGears Go app, which can also show the stick’s screen and give you its local IP address for a browser on your computer.
Engineering menu & codes
There is no numeric engineering code on the Mstick4. MGears moved some developer-level options into its normal settings without opening the full developer mode. The settings owners use most:
- MGears settings → Device settings → Vehicle connection role: choose between standard mode and the BMW mode.
- MGears settings → Display → size: tablet mode makes most apps fit the car screen better; it does not change the size of a third-party launcher.
- Fan Control: an MGears app, added in firmware 1.6.1, for the stick’s cooling.
Installing a third-party launcher requires rooting the stick, which carries the usual warranty and stability risks. Codes for other brands are in the engineering codes table.
Firmware
The stick updates itself over the air. If it will not boot, or an update hangs, MGears provides the Mstick4 Recovery Tool on its update page: it runs on Windows 10 or later, asks you to install the MediaTek USB drivers from its driver folder first, and erases all data on the stick. Release notes are published by MGears’ parent company and linked from the same page. This site does not host or link firmware files.

Accessories that matter
- A good cable and enough power. Random “connection interrupted” drops are the stick’s most-discussed fault; owners who changed to a high-quality USB 3.0 cable, or one with a separate power lead, reported steadier connections. See Mstick4 “Connection interrupted” and AI box keeps rebooting.
- Cooling. Use the Fan Control app first; read how hot is too hot before adding hardware.
- SIM. The stick takes a SIM for mobile data; if data does not work, see AI box SIM card not working.
Setting the stick up at a desk is possible with Android’s Desktop Head Unit; see set up your AI box at home.
How to report a bug
Collect:
- The firmware version from MGears settings, and whether the stick is rooted.
- Car make, model, year and head unit (for VW group cars, the MIB generation).
- Cable and power setup, the vehicle connection role in use, and a short video.
Write to [email protected], the address on MGears’ own pages. Owners who wrote in reported replies within about a day, allowing for the time difference with Korea. The general checklist is on how to report a bug.
